Boxing Day Test – Cricket


The Boxing Day Test match is a cricket match hosted in Melbourbe, Victoria, Australia. It is played between Australian cricket team and an opposing national team which is touring Australia that summer.

It begins annually on Boxing Day(26 December) and is played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

History

The first boxing day test match began on Boxing Day at the MSG. In 1950-51, the Melbourne Ashes Test was held on the 22-27 December, with the third day’s play being on Boxing Day.

No Boxing Day Tests were played in Melbourne between 1953 and 1967.

The modern tradition began during 1974-75 Ashes series at their were six test matches in the series and the third test match began on Boxing Day.

Usually, Boxing day matches are played against England. However, many other countries have always played these.

Australia has won majority of matches. However, it lost the 2010 match to England and 2008 match to South Africa. Apart from these, Australian team has won all matches between 1999-2010.
